Following this http://sumnous.github.io/blog/2014/07/24/gephi-on-mac/ didn't solve my problem.
However gephi were up and running when I reverted the line jdkhome=\"$(/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.6)\" to /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home

It appear like i'm hitting the same wall as Kugler did last years.
