Ubuntu Package for Gephi

Post by rockclimb » 05 Oct 2010 18:10

All,

I've built an Ubuntu package for Gephi and put it into my PPA at https://launchpad.net/~rockclimb/+archive/ppa

Please test this version and let me know how you get on.

Thanks,
Andy

It looks like we could get Gephi added to debian/ubuntu distros!

The process for ubuntu is explained here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/NewPackages

It appears we could simply submit Gephi to Debian, because if a package is already on debian, it can be added to ubuntu repositories

The procedure for debian is explained here: http://mentors.debian.net/cgi-bin/welcome

Maybe we could also asks to the debian "science" team ? Since we need 2 debian members to add a new package, and also need to fit Gephi into a category http://wiki.debian.org/DebianScience

Getting Gephi into Debian (and hence Ubuntu) is my long-term aim. It's not entirely trivial, because I must first package every dependency properly. There are a lot of binary jar files in the Gephi source, and all these need to be built into separate packages. The packages in my PPA contain these binary jar files in their source, and so wouldn't be accepted into Debian or Ubuntu.

I've made a start on packaging the dependencies, starting with the easier ones. Some are already packaged by other people. If you'd like to help out then get in touch. I've been putting them under the Debian Java Packaging Project (http://pkg-java.alioth.debian.org/) to make them easier to maintain.

The full list is below - I intend to start labelling them with their Debian package name, license, etc.
