Cannot open source in NetBeans - [unloadable]

I've downloaded the Gephi source files and have been following these instructions
http://wiki.gephi.org/index.php/Build_Gephi to open it as a project in NetBeans. However, when the project comes up in the Open Project dialog the icon displayed is the Maven icon, not the plugins icon, and next to the project name on the right-hand side it says [unloadable], which is true, as the modules do not display after trying to open it.
