It's not like 0.8 has been out all that long, but there are references in various places pointing to the Social Network Import Plugin at http://gephi.org/plugins/social-network-data-import/.
Maybe I haven't searched the Forum well enough for an explanation... but that link is broken (for me). Is there actually such a plugin?

This plugin had to be temporarly removed from the list as it was breaking Gephi due to duplicate libraries. We informed the author of the plug-in but we didn't hear back from him yet...
