"Appearance" tab not opening

When I attempt to open the appearance tab (to modify node/edge colors based on a particular attribute) I recieve an error notification in the bottom-right screen saying what I think is a java error: "Cannot find TopComponent with preferredID AppearanceTopComponent". I didn't have any luck googling a solution. Does anyone here have any idea how I can fix it?
