How to make edges avoid cutting through non-related nodes?

Hello all,
I'd be very grateful if anyone knows how to make edges avoid nodes that they are not connected to. Ideally I'd like to set a radius so that edges have to have a certain amount of space between themselves and unrelated nodes. The problem is that some edges cut across nodes that they are unrelated to, giving the impression that they are linked.
Any help much appreciated,
