Opening an adjacency matrix: tie strenghts appear as nodes

Hello there,
Just started with Gephi. I opened an adjacency matrix (a .csv from Atlas.ti with ";"s and no extra spaces) with identical row and column labels. To my surprise the tie strengths appear as separate nodes...

What goes wrong here?
I'd like to visualize tie strength by edge thickness and maybe color and edge labels.
