PROJECT BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW
Root Change is an International Development organization based in Washington, D.C.. As part of our work in poverty alleviation and social development, we use social network analysis tools to measure the influence of key actors working to solve development challenges. Through a survey instrument, we 1) collect data about relationships between individuals, organizations, office units, etc., 2) draw "network maps", and 3) run standard network analysis metrics on the maps to identify active networkers, resource hubs, knowledge experts, etc.
Until now, all our social network analysis work has been done using a network analysis software program. Root Change is now working to develop a new Social Network Analysis Utility to move this process to an online server that will utilize an online database (SQL or other), and allow a user to:
GATHER
• Collect inter-organization data: collaborations, financial support, etc.
• Collect background data: location, sector, population serviced, etc.
DETERMINE
• Establish relationship or relationships to be evaluated using social network analysis metrics
• Extract relevant ties to create networke
TAILOR
• Select and prioritize the relevant node measures according to the relationships identified above
• Provide network measures
PRESENT
• Show the network map
• Adjust node shape, color, and size to reflect important players
• Provide commentary on the entire network using network measures
PROGRAMMER JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Design and deploy an interactive web-based application using PHP, Java, OpenGL, Gephi Visualization System, etc.
2. Create and implement a secure server solution for data storage
3. Develop protocols and written documentations for accessing and maintaining the secure data
Required skills:
At minimum, candidates for this position should have the following skills and characteristics:
1. Proficiency and experience with OpenGL and Gephi
2. Candidate should also be skilled in PHP and Java
3. Excellent documentation skills/standards
Well qualified candidates will also have the following:
1. Proficiency and experience with Matlab, Octave, R, SQL, or similar
2. Knowledge in BI software suites and ETL tools such as Hyperion is a plus
