Gephi on Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit)

I have a range of problems with Gephi on Ubuntu 12.04 - 64.bit.
They look java related: I have java version "1.7.0_11".

Java with Gephi running crashes regulary.
Some of the problems that are repeatable include:

The following error alway on exit on the console:

# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
# SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007f1362e6fc58, pid=4126, tid=139721356195584

I run Gephi by calling: ~/gephi/bin/gephi &

I also came across:
Following error message when re-opening just saved project:

The project file couldn't be opened. Please check the file has .gephi extension.
NumberFormatException - For input string: "1.0"

But this is not happening anymore.

Any ideas appreciated.
