I heared about Gephi in the last year from Sune Lehmann's blog while examining algorithm of link communities detection developed by him and his coallegues. Since that time I started using the tool for visualizing biological networks particularly neural systems. Before I met Gephi, during communities visualization I turned my attention from Flare to D3 (through Protovis) guided by growth of ideas of Jeffrey Heer. I regret about disappearing of metaballs plugin out of Gephi (it was the most insightful tool for discovering interrelations in network) and am missing for new Preview API.

A few days ago I've begun bug fixing dated to GSoC and reilized that it is a feasible task for me despite I have never dealt with Java. It seems such simpleness was caused by my background experience in C++, python, R, and ECMAScript dialects and my predisposition to reverse engineering. I learned these languages to translate network science achievements such that communities detection into visual and algorithmic implementations.

I brought to the open-source development community because my belief in the transparency of information in contemporary science. It is not possible (or possible but too slowly) to make genuine breakthrough in understanding of our nature without shared and clear links between data and our experience, our experience and our theories, driven by the data.

I am an undergraduate student currently pursuing B.E.(Hons.) Computer Science at Bits Pilani University, India. Currently I am in my fourth year.

I am deeply interested in graph algorithms and visualization. This will be my first experience with Gephi. When I read about Gephi few days back for GSOC 2012, I found one of the features of Gephi really exciting. That feature was it uses 3D engine to display large networks in real time.

I have experience working in C/JAVA/MATLAB. After looking at the requirements on 'ideas page', I feel I am fit for 'Flexible Table Importer'.

This GSOC project will enable me to get real time experience in fields of graph visualization and data importer which in turn would help me in solving the real world applications in graphs in more efficient and optimized manner.

Hoping to be a part of this exciting journey.

Thanks and regards,
Udit Gupta

My name is Zhaojie Zhang. I am a Ph.D student in Biology and MS student in Computer Science in University of Colorado at Boulder, USA.

I am interested in networks. I used softwares like Gephi and Cytoscape in analyzing biological networks for my research and course projects. I am familiar with Python/R/matlab/shell/Java and bioinformatics data analysis. I saw the requirement specified on the website and think I might be a good fit for "writing the statistical unit testing".

By taking part in this GSoC project, I can on the one hand be more familiar with the different network metrics and on the other hand contribute to a project that is both interesting and useful to me.

Best,

My name is Sreeprasad. I am graduate student in Computer Science from Rochester Institute of Technology.

I heard about Gelphi when I was developing a recommendation engine using a No-SQL graph database called Neo4j.
Last time in Google Summer of code, there was a project was to combine Neo4j and Gelphi. I wish to extend this idea further so that both Neo4j and Gelphi and can read from a Flexible Table such from excel or Microsoft Excel. Apache POI has lot of API for reading data from Microsoft Excel and I can leverage that along with Neo4j to develop a plugin which lets to seed data to both Neo4j and Gelphi.

It would be extremely awesome if the plugin is able to load Neo4j and Gelhpi at the together provided data in form of nodes and related edges are presented in the correct format. Before loading, correctness of data needs to be checked and if not option to abort or continue with remaining correct data should be presented to user.

Excited to work on this.

My name is Quentin Lobbé. I'm a computer science student from the University of Technologie of Compiègne ( France ) where I followed course of data exploratory analysis. Now I'm in 4th semester and i'm working on data mining and graphical interface projects.

I’m really interested in working with abstract data ( geographical network, web interaction ), managing it and giving them new signification using statistical, graphical and cognitive tools ( Bertin and Tufte’s work ).

I first used Gephi to conduct a study of the visibility of the city of Compiègne through the web http://dmnpignaud.perso.sfr.fr/blogIC05.php . I used Gephi as a user. And then during my Intership ( at the Complex Systems Institute in Paris ), I used Gephi API and Tools to develop an interface. This interface goal was to explore and analyse, throught time and space, mobility networks ( using mobile phone data )https://github.com/lobbeque/TouristsFlowInParis .

Now i want to bring my contribution to the gephi project with this google summer of code. I think the legend project is interesting for me because, during my intership, I began making a plugin to add map in the preview module. So there are a lot of good ideas that i could be able to bring in this project.

A least, i’m not just a geek wich spend all his time behind his computer, i’m also filmmaker ( let's have a look http://youtu.be/N9naRbQcK2g ), graphist, photograph and I do like Bernard Stiegler philosophy !!!

My name is Eduardo Espinoza and I'm currently a Computer Science master's student at University of Sao Paulo (USP) - Brazil. I work at the laboratory of Information Visualization and Computer Graphics (VICG). I found out about Gephi in Data Visualization classes. Gephi it's a great tool and it helped us while exploring and making researches about some datasets.

All of the tools we developed at the research group are coded using Java and Swing, but I also have experience with C++ and Python. Actually, I'm already contributing to a FLOSS project, the Projection Explorer (PEx) tool (http://infoserver.lcad.icmc.usp.br/infovis2/PEx). I work at the PEx-Sensors branch (http://www.icmc.usp.br/~paulovic/pexsensors/). Graph problems, algorithm design and information visualization have become my favorite topics, the first two come from the experience I had in programming contests, and the last one from studying and developing visualization techniques.

I read the proposals listed and all of them seem interesting, but I'm more interested on the Force Directed Edge Bundling because it's more involved with information visualization, and I could ask for advise to the university's professors about some improvements when dealing with graph visualizations, something that could benefit both Gephi and the VICG Lab. I also find the Legend module quite interesting, because without the correct legends, data could be misunderstood.

It's the first time I'm applying for the GSoC. The application field of Gephi is highly related to my research field, so it would represent a great contribution to both my studies and the open source community, and what is more important: it would be the first time I help making software widely used all over the world!.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Eduardo Espinoza

My name is Romain Yon, I’m a French student in computer science (major in data mining) at Compiègne University of technology. Also, I will enter next semester the Georgia Tech Master of Science program (major in Machine Learning).

During my previous semester, I did a six-month internship as a developer (I mainly worked on cloud services). Now that I know how working on big projects can be exciting and challenging, I miss such feelings. Thus, I’d like to get involved in an open source project so that I can keep on getting excited and learning while making the community benefit from my work.

I’m found of data analysis, and I often do some data grabbing/analysis during my free time. Along the way, Gephi has been by far the most insightful software I used for (exploratory) data analysis. As Gephi fits perfectly my fields of interest, I would be more than happy to work for this particular open source project. GSoC would be a great opportunity for me to enter the community and to get introduced in-depth to Gephi code. I hope this will permit me to become a permanent Gephi developer right after the GSoC.

Hope to be part of the community soon,
Thanks,
Romain

I am Leo Lin, a senior student at National Taiwan University, Taiwan, my major is computer science and information engineering and I study data mining. I had worked on data visualization last summer, so I think it will be a good topic to pick up in GSoC this year. Gephi is a very fancy and useful tool, so I would like join the group and have some contribution on it.

My experience on data visualization is tracing part of jung2, nodexl, re-implement forced direct part and draw the chart via processing (javascript version). The proposals I have interests in are Cloud Gephi, Statistics Reports and HTML5 Charts and Force Directed Edge Bundling. Statistics Reports and HTML5 Charts is a little be like what I have done before, so I am interesting in getting more detail parts of it.

I am quite familiar with Java/C++/Javascript and a little bit Ruby programming, Qt and processing are two mainly GUI I usually use for showing my projects, for example I used processing to show our result in a news threading system, and I also konw framework like JNI and Seam.

I really wish to get a chance to work in Gephi project and get more experience in open source development!!

I got to know about FOSS from LUG (Linux User Group) seniors in my first year. Since then I have been involved in open source. I have conducted workshop in my college on Linux Install Fest , Android. My skillset are C/C++, Java and Android.

I have done projects in Java and Android. The most notable one would be Boomerang an Android project in which I made a uploader to upload image and status to different social networking sites using gestures.

I would love to work for Gephi as Gephi deals with visualizing and analysing graph, which is area of my interest. I took Graph Theory as my elective among all the other elective for this reason only. I am interested in the idea of Legend Module. I think legends are one of the important features which must be there with every graph for its better understanding and would love to implement this.

I am Vikash Anand, a third year computer science student from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, India and I am really excited about GSoC this year. I would like to work for Gephi this year as I have found some interesting projects that suits my skill sets.

I was introduced to the open source community in my first semester and since then I have been using Linux based OS and other open source software. As of now, I have not contributed greatly to any of the open source organization but this time I am determined to do so and I feel GSoC provides the best platform to contribute to an open source organization. I have also been an active member of Linux Users Group in our college since my first semester.

I have three year of programming experience in C, C++, Java and worked on several college projects basically based on Java and Swings. I am also interested about web technologies and have served the web development team for some of the websites in my college.

I'm Min WU, a master student in the Department of Computer Science and Technology in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Currently, I study in the institute of Computer Graphics and Computer Aid Design, and this is my first year in it. Several days ago, I heard of GSOC from a friend for the first time, and found it a quite good way to participate into open-source organizations, making contributions and growing with them.

Since I'm majored in visualization, I get excited when coming across Gephi in GSOC 2012. Gephi provides an interactive visualization for networks and complex systems, which is quite attractive and powerful to analyze this information society. Before then, I have do some work in the information visualization field, including parallel coordinates, scatter plots and theme rivers. I find it interested for presenting information to people through a particular and intuitive way. Right now, I'm involved in a scientific visualization project in our lab, which requires OpenGL and GLSL technology. Thus, I want to work in Gephi, I think it is a good chance to learn and practice visualization technology, what's more, it will be a quite good open-source experience. Among the ideas in the idea page, I prefer Graph Streaming and Force Directed Edge Bundling. I think these two are challenging and exciting. By the way, Gephi is the unique plan in my application of GSOC 2012.

Last to say, I'm familiar with C, C++ and Java programming language, also be good at OpenGL, GLSL and Qt toolkit.

I wish to work in Gephi, Thank you!

Best regards!
